About

Currently Member of the National Security Advisory Board, Lt Gen Subrata Saha retired as Deputy Chief of Army Staff. He was responsible for perspective planning, force modernization and capability development. He created the Army Design Bureau in 2016. Post retirement, he was the Founding Director General of the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM). He is a recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Yudh Seva Medal, Vishist Seva Medal and Bar (twice), COAS Commendation twice and GOC-in-C Western Command Commendation Card. His in-depth strategic insight is based on his experience as 15 Corps Commander in Kashmir 2014-15; Additional Director General Military Operations 2013-2014; Division Commander in Strike Corps; Brigade Commander on the LoC in High Altitude, Battalion Commander in Counter Terrorism in Assam, Company Commander in Counter Terrorism in Punjab and for six months on Siachen Glacier in the early days of the Glacier War in 1986; and, Deputy Regional Commander United Nations Mission in Angola in 1996-97. His teaching and training experience include assignments held as Commander Higher Command Wing, Army War College, Commandant Assam Regiment Training Centre, and Instructor Indian Military Academy. He was awarded the rare ‘Distinguished’ grading on Junior Command Course. He is the only Indian Army Officer who is a graduate of both, Staff College Camberley (UK), and United States of America, Army War College. He was adjudged Best Overseas Student at Staff College Camberley and awarded the Gold Medal at Higher Command Course. His academic qualifications include PhD on Irregular Warfare, M Phil, Double Masters’ degrees from Madras University and Pennsylvania USA, and Diploma in Management. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Centre for Joint Warfare Studies. His articles, papers and opinion pieces are widely published in Indian and Foreign journals. He contributed a chapter on Out of Area Operations in Book Titled “Military Strategy for India in the 21st Century”, published by Centre for Land Warfare Studies, India, chapter on “Indigenisation of Defense Manufacturing in India”, in the USI Strategic Yearbook 2019.
