Lieutenant General (Dr.) Jagbir Singh Cheema, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, superannuated from the Indian Army as the Deputy Chief of the Army Staff in November 2017 with vast operational and administrative experience along the entire spectrum of conflict in diverse regions of the country. As Deputy Chief of the Army Staff, he was responsible for laying down policy for training in the Indian Army and steering modernization for Information Systems, Automation, Communications, and Army deployment in United Nations Peace-keeping Operations. He commanded a Corps in the Western Sector responsible for the Defence of Punjab and a Division in Central India, having varied operational roles along the Northern and Western borders. He served along the Line of Control (LC) in J&K as a Brigade Commander and an Infantry Battalion Commanding Officer. He commanded a Rifle Company on Siachen Glacier – the highest battlefield of the world and an Assam Rifles Wing on the eruption of insurgency in J&K. The General tenanted the critical assignments of a Brigade Major, Colonel General Staff, and Brigadier General Staff of operationally committed formations, and Chief of Staff of Corps and Command. He also served as Directing Staff (DS) in the Senior Command Wing of the Army War College. The General Officer is the founder Vice-Chancellor of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University, Patiala. He is deeply passionate about sports, having been an excellent athlete himself. He was the Best Athlete and Best Sportsman while undergoing training at the Indian Military Academy in 1978-79. As Deputy Chief of the Army Staff, the General was responsible for managing and developing sports in the Indian Army. He provided a tremendous impetus for the Optimization of Sports Science and Sports Medicine, Scientific Coaching, and Mental Conditioning in the training curriculum of Army Sportsmen.
