About Ms. Shivalaxmi Arumugham

Shivalaxmi Arumugham is currently pursuing her PhD at the Department of Criminology at Karunya Institute of Technology and Science (KITS), Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. She qualified UGC-NET (Criminology) since December, 2020. Her thesis work is on analysing cyber policing techniques to combat human trafficking with a particular focus on detecting child pornography. Before joining PhD, Shivalaxmi was actively engaged in teaching Criminology and Victimology at Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad. Apart from teaching, she was working as a research consultant for Non-Governmental Organizations in Andhra Pradesh and has helped with grant writing, field workers training and project report writing. She has also worked with World Bank in 2018 as a consultant to draft Women Safety Plan for the then developing capital city named Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh. While she was doing her PhD, she has started to work part time as Teaching and Research Fellow at KITS. She worked with International Justice Mission, Chennai, in a project to identify the modus operandi of human traffickers online. She also taught courses such as “Indian fundamental laws and procedures”, “Cyber Forensics” and “Indian Criminal Justice System and Forensic Science”. She has been trained in the implementation of UN convention against Transnational Organised Crime (UNTOC) by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in November 2020. She has secured Rockefeller fellowship for academic excellence and community service to graduate in B.Sc. in Computer Science at Asian University for Women (AUW), Chittagong, Bangladesh. She attended a summer course provided by Stanford University in Palo Alto in California, USA, in 2011. After graduating from AUW, she worked as a Teaching Fellow for a year in Bangladesh. Then, she completed her M.Sc. in Criminology at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu.
